Baseball Recap: Hoopeston Takes a Loss

Hoopeston extended their losing streak to four on Monday, dropping their season record down to 5-15 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the Watseka Warriors. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Cornjerkers of the 6-3 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

Hoopeston saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cole Miller, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI. Nick Cardenas also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

As for Watseka, their victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 3-9. The win made it back-to-back victories for they.

On Watseka's side, Seth Dirks was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. Those two hits gave Dirks a new career-high. Tyler Waugh was another key player, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

Coming up, Hoopeston will take on Cissna Park at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Timberwolves have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.4 runs per game on average), something the Cornjerkers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Watseka, they will head out on the road to take on South Newton at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Warriors are facing the Rebels at the right time seeing as the Rebels are stuck on a nine-game losing streak.
