Basketball Recap: Newport Starts Season with Victory at Home

Newport gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Community Christian Academy Crusaders as they made off with a 74-53 win.

Newport found their leader in sophomore Amontae Lowe, who almost dropped a double-double with 29 points and nine rebounds. Another player making a difference was Irvan Nichols, who shot 50% from the field en route to 12 points and six boards.

Community Christian Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newport is packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will square off against Holmes at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Community Christian Academy, they will venture away from home to face off against Bethel Christian Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
