Preview: Shadow Mountain Matadors vs. Combs Coyotes
The Shadow Mountain Matadors will head out on the road to face off against the Combs Coyotes at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Shadow Mountain comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
Last Thursday, Shadow Mountain came up short against Paradise Valley and fell 58-51. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Shadow Mountain in their matchups with Paradise Valley: they've now lost four in a row.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Pierce Rogers, who scored 14 points along with 8 rebounds. Tate Newport was another key contributor, scoring 10 points along with 7 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Combs earned a 63-50 win over Coronado on Thursday. Given Combs' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 88th, while Coronado is ranked 245th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Logan Tuckfield, who went 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points and 4 assists. The contest was his seventh in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kamren Dubose, who scored 15 points along with 5 assists.
Shadow Mountain has yet to win a matchup at home this season, leaving them with a 0-5 record. As for Combs, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-2.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Shadow Mountain have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 28.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Combs struggles in that department as they've been even better at 31.4 per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out. Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other basketball content.
Shadow Mountain took a serious blow against Combs in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, falling 72-43. Can Shadow Mountain avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
