High school football rankings: Southlake Carroll climbs to No. 3 in MaxPreps Top 25 after statement win in Texas playoffs

Southlake Carroll (Southlake) added another impressive win to its resume over the weekend with a 51-19 thumping of Guyer (Denton) in the Texas Conference 6A Division 2 quarterfinals. The Dragons moved up two spots to No. 3 in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings.

Head coach Riley Dodge's group racked up 511 total yards as they scored at least 49 points for the 11th time this season. Angelo Renda completed 10 of 16 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns while Ohio State-bound wide receiver Brock Boyd hauled in three catches for 116 yards and a score. Davis Penn added 18 carries for 161 yards and a score. 

Up next is a red-hot DeSoto squad that is riding an eight-game win streak and averaging 56.4 points per game during that span. No. 1 Carrollton punched its ticket to a second consecutive Georgia AAAAAA state championship game appearance with a 48-21 win over North Gwinnett (Suwanee). It was the Trojans' fifth win over a top 100 team. 

Up next for the nation's top-ranked team is No. 6 Buford in a matchup of 14-0 teams Dec. 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Needless to say, the implications for the MaxPreps Top 25 are huge in that matchup. 

No. 2 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) returns to action after playing its last game Nov. 1 as it faces No. 23 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) on Wednesday. The Chargers won their third straight Utah 6A state championship Nov. 20 with a 35-20 win over Lone Peak (Highland).

Carson Palmer led No. 5 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to its first Southern Section crown since 2011 a couple weeks ago and now look to finish the season with an Open Division title Saturday against No. 15 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.). The Spartans are looking for their first state championship since 2015. 

No. 16 Bixby (Okla.), No. 17 Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and No. 22 Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, Ala.) all won state titles last week.

No. 8 Edna Karr (New Orleans), No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), No. 12 Grimsley (Greensboro, N.C.), No. 20 Northwestern (Miami) and No. 21 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) play for state championships this week.
