Softball Recap: Atchison Phoenix vs. Sumner Academy Sabres

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Atchison ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They skirted past the Sumner Academy Sabres 11-10. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Phoenix have posted since May 3, 2025.

Kirrah Duncan was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out 13 batters over eight innings while giving up five earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. Those 13 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Andi Estes was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2025. Kelsey Rebant was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run.

Atchison kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sumner Academy only managed five.

The victory got Atchison back to even at 5-5. As for Sumner Academy, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-5.

Coincidentally, Atchison and Sumner Academy will both be playing Harmon the next time they take the field. The Phoenix will head out to face the Hawks at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Sabres will head out to face them at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
