Volleyball Recap: Woburn Memorial Takes a Loss

Woburn Memorial came into their game on Thursday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against the Melrose Red Raiders, falling 3-0. The Tanners were not able to make up for their defeat to the Red Raiders from their previous meeting back in October of 2024.

Woburn Memorial was held off the scoreboard, but that almost wasn't the case: they kept the second set very close. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-18, 25-22, 25-18.

Sasha Lefang paced Woburn Memorial's offense, picking up 16 kills. Lefang got some help from Lauren Snyder and her 19 assists. Finally, Lefang was also a dominant defender, finishing with a team-high seven blocks.

Sadie Smith was nothing short of spectacular for Melrose: she had 30 assists and nine digs. Smith is on a roll when it comes to assists, as she's now posted 14 or more in each of the last 11 games she's played. Sabine Wenzel was another key player, getting 17 kills.

Woburn Memorial has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-8 record this season. As for Melrose, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.

Woburn Memorial will face off against Ursuline Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Melrose, they will square off against Duxbury at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
