Basketball Recap: Carly Bembridge's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Bear Grass Charter over Gates County

After flying high against Northeast Academy For Aerospace and Advanced Tech last Friday, Bear Grass Charter came back down to earth. The Bear Grass Charter Bears fell 58-50 to the Gates County Red Barons on Friday. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Bears, who until this game were averaging 24.29 points allowed.

Bear Grass Charter lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Carly Bembridge, who went 5 for 9 on her way to 13 points in addition to eight boards and four steals. Those 13 points gave Bembridge a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Aubery Dotson, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 14 points in addition to six steals and five assists.

Gates County got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Semiyah Saunders out in front who posted seven points and seven steals. Saunders is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 17 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was London Barber, who put up 15 points and six rebounds.

The loss was their first at home , dropping their record down to 5-2. As for Gates County, their win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-0.

When Bear Grass Charter and Gates County next hit the court, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. Bear Grass Charter will try to stop Perquimans' six-game winning streak when the meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Bear Grass Charter is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.7 points per game this season. Similarly, Gates County will try to stop Martin County's five-game winning streak when the meet at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
