Football Game Preview: Andrews Mustangs vs. Burnet Bulldogs

Two dominant backs in JaeSean DeBouse and Josiah Coronado are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Andrews Mustangs will square off against the Burnet Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Andrews has three straight wins, Burnet has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

On Friday, Andrews earned a 36-28 victory over Lake View.

This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Beau Hudson and Casey Mendoza. Hudson rushed for 127 yards and one score on only 12 carries while Mendoza gained 68 total yards and a touchdown. Hudson is becoming a predictor of Andrews' success: when he posts at least 80 rushing yards the team is undefeated (and 1-5 when he doesn't).

Andrews was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 470 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in August.

Meanwhile, Friday just wasn't the day for Burnet's offense. They took a blow against Stephenville on Friday, falling 49-0. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 554th, while the Yellow Jackets/Honeybees are ranked 18th).

Burnet's loss dropped their record down to 3-7. As for Andrews, the win got them back to even at 5-5.

Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Andrews has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 300.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Burnet struggles in that department as they've been averaging 182.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Andrews strolled past Burnet in their previous meeting back in November of 2024 by a score of 35-21. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Coronado, who rushed for 83 yards and one touchdown, and also picked up 62 receiving yards and one TD. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Mustangs still be able to contain Coronado? There's only one way to find out.
