Football Recap: Cathedral Catholic Skates Past San Marcos with Ease

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cathedral Catholic). They claimed a resounding 38-6 win over the San Marcos Knights. Given the Dons' advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 39th, while the Knights are ranked 131st) , the win on Wednesday wasn't entirely unexpected.

Cathedral Catholic's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Sienna Willard led the charge by picking up 123 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Sabrina Jutronich was another key passer, throwing for 131 yards and two TDs while completing 71.4% of her passes.

Cathedral Catholic didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Nia Talatiana, Payton Steinberg, and Larisa Olivas picked up one apiece. Steinberg has been hot recently, having posted at least one interception the last four times she's played. Talatiana got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Cathedral Catholic's victory was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-2. The home wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 7.3 points on average over those games. As for San Marcos, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-4 record this season.

Cathedral Catholic will host Mission Bay at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for San Marcos, they will take on Poway at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Knights 12.3, the Titans 7.7) so any points scored will be well earned.
