Football Recap: Merrillville Skates Past Chesterton with Ease

Merrillville extended their winning streak to six on Friday, bumping them up to 7-2. They really took it to the Chesterton Trojans for the full four quarters, racking up a 42-7 victory. With the Pirates ahead 28-7 at the half, the contest was all but over already.

It was another big night for Cameron Jordan, who rushed for 161 yards and three TDs on only nine carries, and also picked up 50 receiving yards. That's the most rushing touchdowns he has posted since back in October of 2024. Michael Hill Jr was another key player, having thrown for 257 yards and onetouchdown.

Merrillville's run defense was locked in: Chesterton could only muster 1.2 yards per carry. While two picked up at least 11 total tackles, Keith Edwards stood above the rest. He made 11 total tackles (1.0 for loss) and snagged an interception. Merrillville didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 8.1.

Merrillville didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Warren Brown Lll and Edwards. Edwards is also crushing it when it comes to total tackles: he's made at least eight every time he's taken the field this season. Merrillville got some further help from Stanley Freeman: he picked up two sacks and made four total tackles (3.0 for loss).

As for Chesterton, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-4. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana football rankings (they are ranked 65th, while Merrillville is ranked 18th).

Despite the loss, Chesterton still got an impressive performance from Louis Raffin, who picked up 93 receiving yards and one score. Raffin showed off some serious burst, connecting on a big catch for 62 yards.

Merrillville and Chesterton will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next games. The next time the Pirates see the field they'll take on Hammond Morton at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st. As for Chesterton, their break will end when they face La Porte at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st.
