Preview: Covenant Classical Cavaliers vs. Abilene Christian Panthers
Covenant Classical is 4-0 against Abilene Christian since November of 2021, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Covenant Classical Cavaliers will be playing at home against the Abilene Christian Panthers at 7:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a five-game winning streak alive.
Last Friday, Covenant Classical got themselves on the board against Harvest Christian Academy, but Harvest Christian Academy never followed suit. They blew past the Saints, posting a 56-0 win on the road. The result was nothing new for Covenant Classical, who have now won six matches by 44 points or more so far this season.
Covenant Classical's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Hudson Williams, who threw for 209 yards and four touchdowns while completing 90% of his passes. Williams is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Schroeder, who gained 78 total yards and three touchdowns.
Covenant Classical's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. In fact, those sacks all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Luke Evans.
Meanwhile, Abilene Christian got themselves on the board against Highlands on Thursday, but Highlands never followed suit. They had just enough and edged the Blazers out 2-0. Given Abilene Christian's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 21st, while Highlands is ranked 221st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Covenant Classical's win was their seventh straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 6-1. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 49.0 points per game. Abilene Christian has been no stranger to the win column this season, as they've started out with wins in seven of their first eight matchups, giving them a 7-1 record.
Covenant Classical was able to grind out a solid win over Abilene Christian in their previous meeting back in November of 2022, winning 26-16. Will Covenant Classical repeat their success, or does Abilene Christian have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
