Pueblo Centennial and Pueblo East are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2020, but likely not for long. The Bulldogs will square off against the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Pueblo Centennial hasn't scored more than two runs for three games straight, a trend the squad is eager to reverse.
Pueblo Centennial came into their game on Monday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Pueblo West, falling 16-2.
Pueblo Centennial saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Karley Zamarripa, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Tommilynn Cruz also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Pueblo East got the win against Doherty on Saturday by a conclusive 17-11. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by six runs or more this season.
Luciana Cervantes made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). Those seven strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and one triple.
In other batting news, Emilee Hutchings was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Ana Gonzales was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Pueblo East kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. They are 7-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Pueblo Centennial's loss dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Pueblo East, the victory got them back to even at 11-11.
Pueblo East's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Pueblo Centennial has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Pueblo East, though, as they've been averaging only 2.9 strikeouts. Will Pueblo Centennial keep running through batters, or will the Eagles buck the trend?
Pueblo Centennial was able to grind out a solid win over Pueblo East in their previous matchup back in September, winning 6-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bulldogs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
