The Monte Vista Pirates waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with four straight wins but they left with five. They enjoyed a cozy 44-26 victory over Crested Butte. Given Monte Vista's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 78th, while Crested Butte is ranked 235th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Allessah Archuleta was her usual excellent self, scoring 13 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Archuleta is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Heysenny Beltran was another key contributor, scoring five points along with five rebounds and five steals.
Monte Vista's win was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-1. As for Crested Butte, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-5.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monte Vista will take on Cotopaxi at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Cotopaxi's defense has only allowed 24.5 points per game this season, so Monte Vista's offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Crested Butte, they will be playing at home against Sargent at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Sargent knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five games -- so hopefully Crested Butte likes a good challenge.
