After two weeks of the South Dakota high school football season, some of the traditional powers are coming to the forefront. Here are some of the highlights from the latest results of Rushmore State prep football:
CLASS 11AA RESULTS
South Dakota's top Class 11AA football team ran its record to 2-0 with an impressive 41-0 win by Sioux Falls Roosevelt over cross-town rival Lincoln last weekend. With the win, the Rough Riders have outscored their opponents 111-20 in two weeks. Running back David Sturdevant rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns for Roosevelt, which now faces second-ranked Sioux Falls O'Gorman this weekend. The Knights used big plays to defeat Sioux Falls Washington 28-14 in the Presidents Bowl opening game last weekend at Howard Wood Field. Danny Isaacson led the Knights with 135 yards and a touchdown.
CLASS 11A RECAP
11A's top-ranked team West Central ousted rival Harrisburg last Friday night 16-0 in Sioux Falls to gain revenge for a first-round ouster in last year's playoffs by Harrisburg that ended West Central's 43-game winning streak. The winning Trojans were led by the 85-yard effort of Dylan Peterson, while Harrisburg was led by Preston Harris' 51 yards on 11 carries. Meanwhile, second-ranked St. Thomas More shut out Lead-Deadwood 48-0 for its second straight win. Last year's 11B runners-up are making the move up one class this year
CLASS 11B WRAPUP
Milbank ended previously top-ranked Aberdeen Roncalli's two-year unbeaten streak with a 20-14 victory last weekend. Milbank led 20-0 and had to hold on for the victory. Andrew Leddy led Milbank's running attack with 137 yards on 25 carries, including a 32-yard touchdown run. It was the season opener for Roncalli, while Milbank ran its record to 2-0.
NINE-MAN FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS
De Smet-Iroquois defended its number-one ranking in Class 9AA with a 40-0 shutout of Colman-Egan last weekend, as Daryn Wayne threw a pair of touchdown passes and also ran for another TD in the victory. 9AA second-ranked Emery-Ethan beat number-three Marion-Hurley 45-8, as senior quarterback Will Duba ran for 105 yards and passed for 61 more. Scotland blanked Irene-Wakonda 52-0, as Mark Sayler carried 13 times for 108 yards for the second-ranked (Class 9A) Highlanders.
AVON COACH AWAITS IRAQ DEPLOYMENT
Avon is one of the powers in South Dakota nine-man football, but the Pirates entered this season not sure if their coach will last the year. Coach Tom Culver should know shortly whether he will be deployed to Iraq with his National Guard unit in November, when the Pirates will likely be in the middle of a playoff run. Culver has led top-ranked Avon to three state championships in the last five years. Culver told KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, "I'll find out in early September for sure. Our unit got activated with Bravo Battery out of Salem. So, we're supposed to be going over somewhere in November to Mississippi, and then on to Iraq from there." The 9A power defeated Andes Central 50-0 to begin its season last Friday night.
