Doherty is 0-7 against Pueblo West since September of 2018 but things could change on Tuesday. The Spartans will host the Cyclones at 3:30 p.m. Doherty has given up an average of 15.1 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Smoky Hill hit Doherty with a six-run first inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans came up short against the Buffaloes, falling 12-6.
Sophia Jaramillo was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. That's the fewest earned runs she has allowed since September 4th. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles.
In other batting news, Cayla Baker was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs. Laila Thurman also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Pueblo West made easy work of Mead on Saturday and carried off a 16-6 win. The result was nothing new for the Cyclones, who have now won nine games by seven runs or more so far this season.
Kassidy Donley looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.
At the plate, Acelyn Duran was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kiana Lambert, who went 2-for-3 with five RBI and one double.
Pueblo West has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Doherty, their loss dropped their record down to 1-13.
