Norwich Free Academy is 9-1 against Woodstock Academy since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Wildcats will venture away from home to take on the Centaurs at 4:15 p.m. Norwich Free Academy's pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so Woodstock Academy's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Norwich Free Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Connecticut's top teams: Ledyard, who was ranked 22nd at the time (Norwich Free Academy was ranked sixth). The Wildcats were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Colonels on Friday. Winning may never get old, but the Wildcats sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Dakota Bourdon spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on one hit and racked up nine Ks.
On the hitting side, Sophie Miner was a standout: she went 2-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Amelia Driscoll, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Norwich Free Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, the third road contest was the charm for Woodstock Academy, as they earned their first away win of the season. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Bacon Academy on Friday, sneaking past 6-4.
Woodstock Academy also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Grace Delsanto gave up three earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits.
At the plate, Ellary Sampson was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Maci Corradi, who went 1-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Norwich Free Academy's record is now 6-1. As for Woodstock Academy, the victory got them back to even at 4-4.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. Norwich Free Academy hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Woodstock Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Everything went Norwich Free Academy's way against Woodstock Academy in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Norwich Free Academy made off with a 14-2 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wildcats since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
