The Midway Green Wave will challenge the Carter Hornets at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Midway has struggled recently with four defeats in a row, while Carter will arrive with five straight wins.
Midway managed to slip by Monterey the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Green Wave lost 12-0 to the Wildcats on Thursday.
Midway saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Rowynn McClure, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Carter beat Morristown-Hamblen East 10-6 on Friday.
Kingston Griph and Mayson Lang made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Griph tossed four innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Lang didn't allow a single earned run over 7.2 innings pitched. Griph is becoming a predictor of Carter's success: when he allows at most three earned runs the team is 6-3 (and 6-7 when he doesn't). At bat, Griph went 3-for-6 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI, while Lang got on base in three of his six plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most hits Griph has posted over his last 13 contests.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jeremiah Evans, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He has become a key player for Carter: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 8-10 otherwise. Chandler Bowman was another key player, going 3-for-6 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Carter kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 8.8.
Midway's loss dropped their record down to 2-10. As for Carter, their victory bumped their record up to 12-10.
Midway might still be hurting after the 10-1 defeat they got from Carter in their previous matchup back in April of 2023. Can the Green Wave avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
