The Azle Hornets are taking a road trip to square off against the Granbury Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Azle came out on top against Saginaw on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run third inning. The Hornets' pitcher stepped up to hand the Rough Riders a 10-0 shutout. The Hornets haven't had any issues with the Rough Riders recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
The team relied heavily on Ryleigh Myers, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Brianna Zalesky, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Granbury not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since February 26th (when they won 22-1). They were the clear victors by a 12-5 margin over Saginaw. Considering the Pirates' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Addison Goodman made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off six hits. Goodman was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one double.
In other batting news, Granbury let Rachel Venable and Preslee Carnes run wild. Venable went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI, while Carnes went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Georgia Hausler was another key player, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with two runs.
Granbury kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Granbury's win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-6 and their overall record up to 7-16. As for Azle, their record is now 5-15-1.
Azle got the 'W' when the teams last played back in March against Granbury by a conclusive 13-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hornets since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
