Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Sumner walked away with it. They walked away with a 42-35 victory over the Puyallup Vikings on Saturday. The win was nothing new for the Spartans as they're now sitting on eight straight.
Lance McGee had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 313 yards and five TDs while picking up 8.2 yards per carry. He showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 68 yards. Sumner also got help from Braylon Pope, who showed off his sure hands for 139 receiving yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Sumner was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 313 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 228 rushing yards in 11 consecutive matchups.
Puyallup's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Noah Smith, who threw for 263 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 12.0 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 31 yards. Lawson Looker was Smith's top target, picking up 135 receiving yards and two scores.
Sumner's victory bumped their record up to 10-3. As for Puyallup, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 12-1.
Coming up, Sumner will challenge Lake Stevens at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Spartans 14.8, the Vikings 13.8) so any points scored will be well earned. Puyallup does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
