Basketball Recap: Cesar Chavez Wins Going Away Against South Mountain

Cesar Chavez won the last time they faced South Mountain and things went their way on Friday too. The Cesar Chavez Champions were the clear victor by an 80-56 margin over the South Mountain Jaguars. Given the Champions' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 62nd, while the Jaguars are ranked 260th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Cesar Chavez had a senior duo take command as Lex Clontz went 6 of 11 from beyond the arc on his way to 29 points and five rebounds and Gabriel Briones went 5 for 11 en route to 17 points in addition to five boards and five steals. Briones' evening made it 11 games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Drayce Crenshaw, who posted six points and ten boards.

Cesar Chavez was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Mountain only posted eight assists.

Despite the loss, South Mountain still got an impressive performance from Kaedience Koronich, who went 8 of 12 on his way to 17 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Eliah Dixon Jr., who earned nine points.

Cesar Chavez has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 10-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.8 points per game. As for South Mountain, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 12 of their last 15 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-16 record this season.

Cesar Chavez has already played their next game, a 57-55 win against Maryvale on the 4th. As for South Mountain, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 68-53 victory against Kofa on the 4th.
