6:15 p.m. — Ponderosa senior Jacob Myers’ quest for a 5A three-peat began with a breeze. He won the 2002 title at 120 pounds and last year won the 132-pound class. Now, at 144 pounds, he opened his tournament with a 15-0 technical fall victory over Fruita Monument senior Orin Mease. — Patrick Saunders, The Denver Post
6:01 p.m. — Thompson Valley senior Jackzen Rairdon pinned his opponent in his Class 4A 144-pound match to continue his quest for a four-peat. All six wrestlers going for a four-peat this weekend — two girls and four guys — have now advanced to the quarterfinals. — Kyle Newman
5:25 p.m. — Earlier today, Calhan’s Ciara Monger (235 pounds) continued her pursuit of a fourth championship and an undefeated season, pinning Widefield’s Rilen Rose Casares in 1:18. — Patrick Saunders
5:20 p.m. — Talk about fast work. Pomona sophomore Zaidyn Quinonez, who won the 2023 5A title at 106 pounds, won his tournament opener at 120 pounds on Thursday, pinning Mountain Range senior Angelo Melendez in a mere 15 seconds. That’s the second-fastest pin of the tournament so far, behind Fort Lupton three-time champ D’Mitri Garza-Alarcon’s 12-second pin in the opening round of the Class 3A 138 bracket. — Patrick Saunders
5:13 p.m. — Pine Creek senior Everest Sutton is looking for a two-state three-peat. He won two state championships in Oregon, at 106 pounds in 2021 and 113 in ’22. Now he’s hoping to mine gold in Colorado at the Class 5A. 113-pound division. He began his title quest by pinning Fountain Fort Carson sophomore Dayton Albrecht in 1:25. — Patrick Saunders
3:34 p.m. — With the morning session of Class 2A/3A preliminaries over, Ball Arena was cleared, and now big-school fans are beginning to filter in and Class 4A/5A wrestlers have started their warm-up. — Kyle Newman
3:03 p.m. — Persaeus Gomez, Pomoma’s undefeated wrestler at 130 pounds, is attempting to become Colorado’s first-ever four-time champion. She got off to a great start, pinning Calhan’s Emersen Jack in 3:29. — Patrick Saunders
2:58 p.m. — It took Pomona sophomore Timberly Martinez just 38 seconds to win her first match of the tournament. Wrestling at 135 pounds this year, last year’s 130-pound champion pinned Battle Mountain’s Ayla Hampton. — Patrick Saunders
2:50 p.m. — Brush sophomore Ritchie Bruno (Class 3A, 175 pounds) kept his undefeated season alive by pinning Rifle’s Arath Lopez in 2:25 during the first round of the tournament. — Patrick Saunders
1:35 p.m. — Crowley County’s Halloran brothers wrestled at the same time on adjacent mats. Aidan Halloran, who made it back to state following a long cancer battle that’s still ongoing, lost an 8-7 decision at 157 pounds to Yuma senior Trey Stegman after Stegman got a near-fall in the waning seconds of the match. It was clear that Halloran, who is still going through chemotherapy, didn’t have any stamina in the final period. Meanwhile, his brother Keegan Halloran cruised to a 15-3 major decision over Buena Vista sophomore Abel Flowers, a victory that came with a bloody tooth after getting head-butted. — Kyle Newman
12:01 p.m. — The state tournament begins today at Ball Arena. In the history of the tournament, 30 wrestlers have finished their careers with four state titles (tap here to see the full list). Soon, that list could grow by six with Buena Vista’s Caleb Camp (2A-132), Mullen’s Dale O’Blia (3A-120), Fort Lupton’s D’mitri Garza-Alarcon (3A-138), Thompson Valley’s Jackzen Rairdon (4A-144), Pomona’s Persaeus Gomez (Girls-130) and Calhan’s Ciara Monger (Girls-235) all making a bid for title No. 4.

The 2A, 3A and girls preliminary matches take place from noon to 3:15 p.m., while 4A and 5A matches run from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Tickets for the tournament can only be purchased online. Here’s a link to purchase tickets for each session. — The Denver Post
