Levi Wells and Javier Machuca provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Mountain View. The longest such play in Mission Valley this season, the connection resulted in 85 yards.
El Monte moved up to 412 from 446 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Lions were able to make move up by defeating Gabrielino 38-14.
El Monte's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Brandon Martinez threw for 417 and three touchdowns and Abel Barrajas had 156 yards receiving. On the ground Bryan Luevano chipped in 86 yards. Adolfo Sanchez helped El Monte's passing attack out by catching five balls for 125 yards.
Joel Sanchez's team's Martinez and Barrajas have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Martinez has thrown for 3265 yards this season, while Barrajas, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 54 catches for 1034 yards. Arroyo's Peter Aholoka leads the league in rushing yards with 746.
Sanchez of the the Lions' is a few catches away from breaking 1,000 yards for the season. He needs only 60 receiving yards in this week's game against South El Monte to get there. So far this year, he has garnered 49 catches for 940 yards.
A big matchup in Mission Valley this week will be when the Eagles take on the Knights. Gabrielino is currently in first, while Arroyo is in fourth.
El Monte extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Harold Sanin's team, 38-14. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Lions.
