Saugus' and Valencia's matchup last Friday was up for grabs at halftime, but Saugus were thoroughly outmatched in the second half. Saugus have to be aching after a bruising 14-41 defeat to Valencia. Defeat or not, Saugus got some senior leadership from Matthew Ballentine, who caught passes for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Cole Gallagher, who passed for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. In fact, with nine tackles Thompson was a force on both sides of the ball.
Meanwhile, Canyon have been struggling to pick up a victory, with their contest against Golden Valley making it four winless games in a row. Canyon fell just short of Golden Valley by a score of 33-35. Things were expected to be close, but in this case the state rankings mixed up the winning team.
With the two teams each stumbling in off of a loss, both will be hungry for the win. If Canyon want to win, Canyon will need to focus on stopping Saugus' senior Matthew Ballentine, who caught passes for 75 yards and 2 touchdowns, and senior Cole Gallagher, who passed for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. We'll see whether or not they are up to the challenge.
