Southlake Carroll (Southlake) showed why it is the top-ranked team in the state of Texas and No. 5 nationally Saturday in a 51-19 playoff victory over
Guyer (Denton). The Dragons advance to next weekend's Conference 6A Division 2 semifinals against the winner of
DeSoto-
Willis.
Trailing 13-7 in the first quarter, Southlake Carroll (14-0) scored 38 straight points before conceding another score. Senior
Davis Penn ran for 158 yards on 17 carries with a late touchdown, Ohio State commit
Brock Boyd had 116 yards on three catches with a score while Pittsburgh quarterback commit
Angelo Renda completed 9 of 15 attempts for 227 yards and two TDs in the victory.
Southlake Carroll also beat Guyer in last year’s regional final 56-45 before falling in the state championship game to
Vandegrift (Austin), 24-17.

Guyer made an early statement, forcing Southlake Carroll into a three-and-out on its opening drive. Army commit
Caleb Fowler blocked the ensuing punt and recovered the ball deep in Dragon territory, setting up a six-yard rushing score from Illinois commit
Kaedyn Cobbs to give the Wildcats a 6-0 lead at the 8:17 mark of the first.
Carroll responded on the next drive as Renda hit Boyd for a 74-yard TD strike to take a 7-6 lead.
Sophomore quarterback
Carter Morgan broke free for a 40-yard keeper that gave the Wildcats the lead back at 13-7, but that would prove to be the high point for Guyer's fortunes on the day.
Two drives later, Carroll went deep into the playbook with a double-reverse flea flicker that saw Renda connect with
Luc Jacquemard from 31 yards out and reclaimed a 14-13 lead for the Dragons.
Brooks Biggers had rushing touchdowns of 19 and 7 yards while
Parker Harris,
Marcus Brouse and
Crawford Taylor all had sacks to silence Guyer in the second quarter, leading to a 28-13 halftime cushion.
Harris added a seven-yard rushing score and a fumble recovery while
Gavin Strange booted a 31-yard field goal and had a touchdown-saving tackle on a big kick return to underscore the second half for Carroll. Brouse added a strip sack which was recovered and returned 21 yards for a touchdown by Taylor in the fourth quarter.
Southlake’s win ended a 10-game win streak for Guyer.
