Ontario Christian (Ontario, Calif.) capped a 34-2 season with the school's first state title, helping the Knights finish No. 1 in the final MaxPreps Top 25 high school girls basketball rankings and
earn the distinction of being named MaxPreps National Champion.
Against a slate that featured games against teams from eight states, Ontario Christian beat four state champions and three others who played in a title game.
The Knights turned a loss in the section final into a lesson. According to head coach Aundre Cummings, that propelled them to the three-game run to the state championship.
"We kind of started to sense it in the middle of the year, that national championship teams are crowned when they win their state championship," Cummings said. "We tried to get them to understand how historic they could be.
"The ultimate goal is winning the national championship."
Ontario Christian was led by top-rated junior
Kaleena Smith, arguably the nation's best player regardless of class. She was brilliant in the state championship game against
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) with a game-high 24 points. For the season, Smith averaged 31.5 points and 6.9 assists per game.
Sophomore
Tatianna Griffin (21.3 points per game), junior
Dani Robinson (15.9) and freshman
Chloe Jenkins (14.7) added to Ontario Christian's firepower, helping the Knights pile up 87 points per game while winning by an average of nearly 35 points per outing.
The scary part is they could all be back next season.
