The Langston Hughes Panthers won the last time they faced the Douglas County Tigers, and things went their way on Tuesday too. Langston Hughes came out on top against Douglas County by a score of 55-47. Given Langston Hughes' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 16th, while Douglas County is ranked 130th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Langston Hughes' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Brentis Schaeffer led the charge by scoring 19 points along with three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaron LeMelle, who scored 13 points along with nine rebounds.
Douglas County's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Christian Richards, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Those seven rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. Marquacious Wright was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with five rebounds.
Langston Hughes' win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.8 points per game. As for Douglas County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Langston Hughes' road trip will continue as they head out to face Alexander at 7:30 p.m. on January 11th. As for Douglas County, they will take on East Paulding at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
