3A Conference 17 recap September 4, 2013
Markuise Hemby of Swansboro ran for the longest rushing play in 3A Conference 17 this season against Ashley last week. Hemby's team beat the Screaming Eagle as he sprinted for 68 yards on the play and finished with 73 in all.
West Carteret moved up to 127 from 239 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Patriots climbed the ranks as a result of topping East Carteret 35-12.
Tyrone Brown was the best receiver in the league this week as West Craven defeated South Central. Brown tallied 3 receptions for 72 yards.
Elijah Harris was the most successful running back in 3A Conference 17 this week. In 21 carries, he ran for 155 yards as White Oak beat the Falcons. Camara Rawls also contributed to the rushing game with 69 yards on the ground.
Chris Phipps put up the best numbers through the air as Swansboro topped Ashley. He finished with 8 completions for 128 yards. Phipps' favorite target this week was Hemby, who caught 3 passes for 51 yards.
Tim Laspada's team's Phipps and Hemby have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Phipps has thrown for 348 yards this season, while Hemby, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 5 catches for 191 yards. Harris from the Vikings leads the league in rushing with 445 yards.
Jacksonville took down Jones Senior 45-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
