Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), the No. 1 team in MaxPreps Top 25 high school volleyball rankings, had a gut-check last week against No. 13 Torrey Pines (San Diego, Calif.) before coming away with a 15-5 fifth-set victory to stay unbeaten.

Hanna McGinest and Eva Jeffries came alive, combining for 45 kills as Sierra Canyon battled back from down 2-1 to win the fourth and fifth sets. The Trailblazers (13-0) were without Nebraska commit Kendall Omoruyi, who was helping USA Volleyball win gold at the U23 PanAm Cup.

No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) also moved to 13-0 as the Monarchs grabbed a Dave Mohs Memorial title over the weekend, beating Marymount (Los Angeles, Calif.) 2-0 in the final. Like Sierra Canyon, the Monarchs have only dropped four sets this season. Westley Matavao earned MVP honors at Dave Mohs.

No. 13 Carroll (Fort Wayne) won a MaxPreps Top 25 matchup in Indiana last week with a 3-1 victory over No. 25 Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers). Sarah Stegall, Katelyn Peters and Emma Frisinger combined for 48 kills. The Chargers also were without a Preseason MaxPreps All-American in Cala Haffner, who was playing for the United States.

Including Omoruyi and Haffner, there were five others who played on the gold-medal squad: Isabel Incinelli of No. 5 Orangewood Christian (Maitland, Fla.), Tessa Larkin of No. 6 Xavier College Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.), Nyla Livings of No. 7 Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas), Sophee Peterson of No. 11 Byron Nelson (Trophy Club, Texas) and Taimane Ainu'u of No. 18 'Iolani (Honolulu, Hawaii).
