Make it 13 blowout wins for the Sunnyside Blue Devils this season. They blew past Ironwood Ridge 70-41 on the road. Given Sunnyside's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 14th, while Ironwood Ridge is ranked 90th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sunnyside got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Nayeli Nidez-Acu?a out in front who scored 19 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Nidez-Acu?a is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Janae Pritchett, who scored 23 points along with two steals.
Ironwood Ridge's loss came despite strong showings from Jaidyn Saucedo and Molly Walter. Saucedo scored 21 points along with three steals, while Walter dropped a double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds. Walter hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for nine straight games.
Sunnyside's win bumped their record up to 18-3. As for Ironwood Ridge, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sunnyside's road trip will continue as they head out to face Rincon/University at 7:00 p.m. on January 16th. Rincon/University is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games. As for Ironwood Ridge, they will head out on the road to square off against Cholla at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cholla comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 24 points in their last four games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
