Basketball Recap: Fillmore Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Yaneli Landin and Hermelinda Ocegueda

Fillmore saw some tournament action on Wednesday. They lost 61-36 to the Verdugo Hills Dons. The Flashes have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the loss, Fillmore had strong showings from Hermelinda Ocegueda, who dropped a double-double with ten points and 13 boards, and Yaneli Landin, who dropped a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Ocegueda has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more rebounds the last ten times she's played. Lucy Murillo was another key player, putting up six points and 13 boards.

Verdugo Hills was led to victory by Nicole Olivera and Kayla Pimentel. Olivera shot 55% from the field en route to 26 points in addition to five assists and four steals, while Pimentel posted 21 points and five steals. Pimentel has become a key player for the Dons: the team is undefeated when she posts at least three steals, but 0-3 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Jayla Villatoro, who scored two points and eight rebounds.

Fillmore's defeat dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Verdugo Hills, the victory got them back to even at 3-3.

Coming up, Fillmore will take on Hueneme at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. This will be the Flashes' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Verdugo Hills, they will challenge San Fernando at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
