The Cornerstone Family Saints put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They put the hurt on Shawnee Mission Christian with a sharp 40-15 victory. Given Cornerstone Family's advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 16th, while Shawnee Mission Christian is ranked 176th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cornerstone Family was led to victory by Liz Brown and Kaylee Heinen. Brown scored 12 points along with 7 rebounds and 5 steals, while Heinen scored 16 points along with 8 steals and 5 rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Heinen has scored at least 25% of Cornerstone Family's points. Lana Smittick was another key contributor, scoring 4 points along with 8 rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Shawnee Mission Christian lost, one person who can't be blamed is Emily Kleczka. Despite the final result, she scored 8 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Kleczka scored a full 53.3% of Shawnee Mission Christian's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jeydan Umberger, who scored 3 points along with 10 rebounds.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Shawnee Mission Christian struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Cornerstone Family racked up 12.
Cornerstone Family pushed their record up to 5-0 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for Shawnee Mission Christian, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-3.
Cornerstone Family will head out on the road to face off against Smoky Valley Home Educators at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Smoky Valley Home Educators will be coming into the contest with an undefeated record on the line. As for Shawnee Mission Christian, they have the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Blue Ridge Christian at 5:30 p.m. on December 12th.
