The Fairbury Jeffs had to kick off their season on the road on Thursday, but they showed no ill effects. They had just enough and edged Heartland out 41-39. This was payback for Fairbury, who suffered a 53-44 loss the last time these two teams met.
Blake Starr was the offensive standout of the matchup as he dropped a double-double on 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Heartland's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sam Quiring, who scored 13 points along with 6 rebounds. Hudson Regier was another key contributor, scoring 4 points.
Fairbury's win bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Heartland, their loss dropped their record down to 0-1.
Fairbury will be playing in front of their home fans against Fillmore Central at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. As for Heartland, they will head out on the road to face off against Wilber-Clatonia at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
