Video: Southern Columbia Area wins 2A title
Tigers dominate matchup with Avonworth.
State championship weekend in Pennsylvania high school football came to a close Saturday night with the Class 6A title game.
Ranked No. 15 nationally this week by MaxPreps, St. Joseph's Prep (12-2) handled Central Dauphin (12-3) 35-13 to win its fifth state title of the decade. The Hawks played without junior stars Kyle McCord and Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
In Class 3A, Wyoming Area (14-1) rallied past Central Valley (14-2) 21-14. The victorious Warriors trailed 14-0 heading into the fourth quarter but responded with 21 points in the final 12 minutes for the win.
The state championship action began Thursday night with Thomas Jefferson beating Dallas 46-7 for the Class 4A title.
Friday's first game featured Farrell edging Bishop Guilfoyle 10-7 for the Class 1A title.
Southern Columbia Area capped a 16-0 campaign by crushing Avonworth 74-7 for the 2A crown. The Tigers won their third consecutive state title and 48 games in a row overall.
Friday ended with Archbishop Wood beating Cheltenham 19-15 for the Class 5A championship. Junior running back Kaelin Costello carried 38 times for 280 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Hershey Park Stadium in Hershey served as the host site for all six state title contests.
Champions in 2018 were Farrell (1A), Southern Columbia (2A), Aliquippa (3A), Cathedral Prep (4A), Penn Hills (5A) and St. Joseph's Prep (6A).
