On Friday, the Roosevelt Roughriders faced the Coolidge Colts in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Roosevelt slipped by Coolidge 72-71. Winning may never get old, but Roosevelt sure is getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
Roosevelt's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Gabriel Hudgens, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and four steals. That's the first time this season that Hudgens pulled down eight or more rebounds. Another player making a difference was Kareem Davis, who scored 13 points.
Coolidge's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Quintin Cooper, who scored 27 points. Cooper scored a full 38% of Coolidge's points, the 15th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Eric Turner was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with 12 rebounds.
Roosevelt is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. As for Coolidge, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 10-5.
Roosevelt is on the road again on Wednesday and play against Jackson-Reed at 7:30 p.m. on January 10th. Jackson-Reed is on a four-game streak of home wins, Roosevelt a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. Coolidge will take on Banneker at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Banneker is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 63 points per game.
