The West Mesa Mustangs were the 46-42 winner over the Piedra Vista Panthers when they last played one another back in February of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. West Mesa ended up on the wrong side of a tough 58-38 walloping at the hands of the Panthers on Tuesday.
West Mesa lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Evelyn Brito, who scored six points along with five steals. Another player making a difference was Marsai Martinez, who scored four points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Piedra Vista's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Tyra Holyan, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Christian Smith, who scored 12 points.
West Mesa has not been sharp recently as the team's lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-8 record this season. As for Piedra Vista, they pushed their record up to 10-9 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home.
West Mesa will head out on the road to challenge the Golden Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Eldorado focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 29 on Tuesday. As for Piedra Vista, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Scorpions at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Farmington presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Panthers in New Mexico (the Scorpions are ranked first, while the Panthers are ranked 31st).
