After two weeks on the road, Monroe is heading back home. On Friday they will take on Piedmont at 7:30 PM. The match looks good for Monroe since they are the big favorites in the MaxPreps state rankings.
Monroe were the first on the board but had to settle for second at the end of their contest against Sun Valley last Friday. Monroe didn't finish too far behind, but the squad still lost 20-25 to Sun Valley. Monroe got a solid performance out of senior Trey Shepherd, who passed for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns; unfortunately, it just wasn't enough for the victory. If you haven't heard Shepherd's name lately, then you haven't been paying much attention: he has loomed large in their past eight games.
Meanwhile, things haven't been easy for Piedmont, and their match last Friday only extended their streak of losses to four. They were dealt a punishing 0-41 loss at the hands of Charlotte Catholic. Piedmont were in a tough position by the half, with the score sitting at 0-31.
With both teams hitting sour notes in their previous games, they will no doubt be looking to produce a better outcome in this one. Piedmont's offensive line will need to gear up for a tough test against a Monroe defensive front that amassed five sacks against Sun Valley, so we'll see if they are up to the task.
