The Kearney Catholic Stars scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Saturday. They walked away with a 64-57 victory over North Platte. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Kearney Catholic got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Owen Axmann out in front who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 11 rebounds. Those 11 rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Carson Murphy, who scored 16 points.
When it comes to explaining why North Platte lost, one person who can't be blamed is Lance Gifford. Despite the final result, he scored 19 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. That's the first time this season that Gifford posted two or more blocks. Another player making a difference was Jesse Mauch, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds.
Kearney Catholic's victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-5. As for North Platte, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-6.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing Lexington the next time they take the court. Kearney Catholic will head out to face Lexington on Tuesday, while North Platte will host them on Friday.
