Cherry Creek is 8-2 against Mullen since January of 2018, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Cherry Creek Bruins will be playing in front of their home fans against the Mullen Mustangs at 5:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Cherry Creek comes in on five and Mullen on three.
Last Wednesday, Cherry Creek faced Arapahoe in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Cherry Creek strolled past Arapahoe with points to spare, taking the game 53-37.
Cherry Creek's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Tianna Chambers, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds and three steals, and Molly Dorighi, who scored nine points along with three steals. Braelynn Barnett was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Meanwhile, Mullen stacked a fifth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Wednesday. They took their game at home with ease, bagging a 69-40 victory over Overland. Given Mullen's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while Overland is ranked 68th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Mullen found their leader in underclassman Makenzie Jones, who scored 18 points along with six rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Tatum Jones, who scored ten points along with three blocks and two steals.
Cherry Creek pushed their record up to 11-2 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. As for Mullen, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the pair are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Cherry Creek hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 55 points per game. However, it's not like Mullen struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 52.9 points per game. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Cherry Creek didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Mullen in their previous matchup back in January of 2023, but they still walked away with a 55-49 win. Does Cherry Creek have another victory up their sleeve, or will Mullen turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
