East Coweta is 1-7 against Westlake since October of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Indians will welcome the Lions at 7:30 p.m. East Coweta has given up an average of 40.6 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
East Coweta is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Carrollton on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Indians were dealt a 50-23 loss at the hands of the Trojans. The Indians were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 50-13.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Ricky Howell Jr and Cameron Wood. Wood had a great game and rushed for 106 yards and three TDs on only eight carries. Meanwhile, Howell Jr did his best for the losing side, picking up 87 receiving yards and one score.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for East Coweta, racking up 11 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Chance Gilbert, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
East Coweta didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Dylan Holston.
Meanwhile, Westlake got their first taste of in-conference action on Friday and they started things off strong. They claimed a resounding 41-10 win over Chapel Hill. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won three contests by 28 points or more so far this season.
Westlake found their leader in sophomore Cannon Robinson, who threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 12.8 yards per attempt. The Lions are 3-1 when Robinson posts three or more passing touchdowns, but 1-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacob Jackson, who rushed for 74 yards and one TD on only seven carries.
Westlake's run defense was locked in: Chapel Hill could only muster 1.1 yards per carry. While three picked up at least seven total tackles, Elijah Cox stood above the rest. He picked up two sacks and made seven total tackles (3.0 for loss). Westlake's run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed 3.65 yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 4.2 on average over their last three games.
Westlake's defense didn't let Jordan Spencer, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for six sacks. In that department, Cox was the leader with two. He also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven. Westlake got some further help from Royal Walker: he forced one fumble and made seven total tackles (4.0 for loss).
East Coweta's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Westlake, their victory bumped their record up to 4-5.
East Coweta couldn't quite get it done against Westlake in their previous matchup back in October of 2024 as they fell 48-35. Thankfully for the Indians, Sean Smith (who threw for 300 yards and five touchdowns while completing 73.1% of his passes, and also rushed for 43 yards) won't be suiting up this time.
