Football Recap: Goddard Takes Down Maize South in a Playoff Battle

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Goddard walked away with it. They skirted past the Maize South Mavericks 27-24. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Lions have posted since September 20, 2024.

Erik Olivas had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 241 yards and one score while picking up 8.3 yards per carry, and also picking up 108 receiving yards and one touchdown. He was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 67 yards.

Goddard's run defense was locked in: Maize South could only muster 2.5 yards per carry. The team can thank Gage Koenigs for the heroic effort on defense: he. Goddard didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 6.6.

Goddard's defense didn't let Reign Illian, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. Trey Wright was especially locked on to Maize South's QB and sacked him three times. Wright is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made seven or more in each of the last three games he's played. Another thorn in Maize South's side was Koenigs, who made 13 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Several Mavericks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Illian, who threw for 319 yards and three TDs while picking up 11.4 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 40 yards. Maize South's leading receiver Stratten Ebers was Illian's top target yet again, picking up 114 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Goddard has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 33.3 points over those games. As for Maize South, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-5.

Looking ahead, Goddard will challenge Salina Central at 7:00 p.m. on the 7th. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 919 yards in their previous games. Maize South does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
