The Canutillo Eagles will head out to challenge the Montwood Rams at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Having struggled with 15 defeats in a row, Canutillo turned things around against San Elizario on Tuesday. They put the hurt on San Elizario with a sharp 17-2 victory. With that win, Canutillo brought their scoring average up to 6.1 runs per game.
Gio Navarro made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, earning one run and three stolen bases. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Izzy Salazar was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with five stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted over her last 11 games. Abby Lujan was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Montwood). They blew past Hanks 23-9 on Tuesday.
Like Canutillo, Montwood also got a great game from a two-way player: Isabella Sanchez. She pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Sanchez was even better at the plate, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Montwood got a massive performance out of Jaeda Quinones, who fired off two home runs, four runs, and five RBI while going 4-for-5. The team also got some help courtesy of Celeste Romo, who went 5-for-6 with one home run, four runs, and three RBI.
Montwood hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive matchups.
Canutillo's record is now 4-17. As for Montwood, their record now sits at 8-11-1.
