The Chula Vista Spartans will challenge the Calexico Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Chula Vista is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They came out on top against Foothills Christian on Saturday by a score of 6-3 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game).
Pablo Alvarado made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Alvarado was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024.
In other pitching news, Jorge Lopez tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits.
Back at the plate, Gabriel Mendoza was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Jose De La Cruz, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Chula Vista kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Calexico had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.6 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Saturday. They never let the Tigers get on the board and left with a 7-0 victory.
Calexico also got a great performance from David Lara as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Jose Ortega, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Joshua Apodaca, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Calexico's win bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Chula Vista, their victory bumped their record up to 2-3-1.
Chula Vista suffered a grim 9-3 defeat to Calexico in their previous meeting back in April of 2022. Can Chula Vista avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
