Yorktown has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the Monroe Central Golden Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Indiana (Yorktown is ranked 110th, while Monroe Central is ranked 125th).
Last Tuesday, it was a hard-fought game, but Yorktown had to settle for a 43-40 defeat against Wapahani. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Yorktown in their matchups with Wapahani: they've now lost five in a row.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Lilly Sylvester, who scored 13 points along with 7 rebounds. The game was her eighth in a row with at least ten points. Addy Barnes was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with 3 steals.
Meanwhile, Monroe Central had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 27.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They strolled past Shenandoah with points to spare, taking the game 43-24. 43 seems to be a good number for Monroe Central as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of points in their previous game.
It was another big night for Kimber Abshear, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds. She hasn't dropped below two blocks for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Addy Puckett, who scored 11 points.
Yorktown bumped their record down to 5-3 with that loss, which was their third straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.3 points per game. As for Monroe Central, their win bumped their record up to 7-2.
Keep an eye on the arc in Thursday's matchup: Yorktown have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 4.5 threes per game. It's a different story for Monroe Central, though, as they've been averaging only 4.3 per game. Given Yorktown's sizeable advantage in that area, Monroe Central will need to find a way to close that gap. Yorktown didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Monroe Central in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, but they still walked away with a 41-37 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Yorktown since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
