WALNUT COVE, N.C. - After three lead changes,
East Surry (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) took the lead for good when
Ethan Atkins kicked a field goal with under a minute left in the second quarter and held on to upset
South Stokes (Walnut Cove, N.C.) 24-22 on Saturday.
The Cardinals were up 17-15 at the half after taking the lead on a field goal by Atkins in the second quarter.
East Surry expanded its lead to nine points entering the fourth quarter. ES scored once in the quarter on a touchdown run.
The Pilot Mountain school led by as many as 9 points before the Sauras cut into the final margin.
Atkins was the top performer for the Cardinals. The junior kicked one field goal.
JJ Davis played well for South Stokes. The junior threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to seven on the year.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 21-13 win for East Surry.
The win was a nice bounce back for ES, which lost to Mount Airy last week, 51-7. The defeat comes as a step back for South Stokes, which notched a 52-14 victory over Surry Central in its previous outing.
