The Elkhorn Valley Falcons fought the good fight in their overtime game against the St. Mary's Cardinals on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 49-48 to the Cardinals. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Elkhorn Valley in their matchups with the Cardinals: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the loss, Elkhorn Valley saw an underclassman step up: Korbin Werner dropped a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Dawson Hansen, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead St. Mary's to victory, but perhaps none more so than Logan Brabec, who scored 15 points along with five rebounds. Brabec is trending in the right direction, as he's improved his point production for three games straight. Another player making a difference was Gage Hedstrom, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds.
Elkhorn Valley's loss dropped their record down to 13-4. As for St. Mary's, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elkhorn Valley will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against the Trojans at 7:30 p.m. on February 6th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Nebraska (Cedar Catholic is ranked 60th, while the Falcons are ranked 48th). As for St. Mary's, they will head out on the road to take on the Renegades at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
