University has gone a perfect 10-0 against Preston recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Hawks will look to defend their home field against the Knights at 5:00 p.m. University is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
University is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Bridgeport, who was ranked seventh at the time (University was ranked 19th). The Hawks fell just short of the Indians by a score of 7-6 on Thursday. The Hawks' loss signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
University got a good showing from James Bryner, who pitched 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits.
At the plate, Brock Shuba was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Preston didn't have quite enough to beat University on Wednesday and fell 9-8.
Slaton Manko was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Preston is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 6-8-1 otherwise. Manko was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Bryson McNew made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Wyatt Moyer was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Preston now has a losing record of 8-9-1. As for University, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-12.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. University has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Preston struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
University came out on top in a nail-biter against Preston in their previous meeting on Wednesday, sneaking past 9-8. Will the Hawks repeat their success, or do the Knights have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
