Manzano is 9-1 against Rio Grande since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. Manzano will host Rio Grande at 4:00 p.m. Manzano is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Manzano will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Saturday, then bounced right back against Del Norte on Monday. Manzano was the clear victor by a 14-1 margin over Del Norte. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Monarchs as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Briana Largo spent all five innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits.
At the plate, Kiara Laweka and Shania Aragon did most of the damage at the plate: Laweka went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while Aragon scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Nevaeh Robles Lopez was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 17 runs the game before, Rio Grande was a bit more limited in their contest on Monday. They lost 20-2 to Eldorado. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since March 28, 2019, but that streak is no more.
Jenessa Purcella made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-2.
Even though they lost, Rio Grande hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in seven consecutive games.
Manzano's win bumped their record up to 4-10. As for Rio Grande, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Manzano hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. However, it's not like Rio Grande struggles in that department as they've averaged .453. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Manzano might still be hurting after the 29-21 loss they got from Rio Grande in their previous matchup back in March. Can Manzano avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
