Cornerstone Family has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will challenge the Heritage Christian Academy Chargers at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Cornerstone Family has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Cornerstone Family scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 55-29 margin over Heritage Christian. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory Cornerstone Family has posted yet this season.
Cornerstone Family's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Lana Smittick, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Kaylee Heinen, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Heinen has scored at least a third of Cornerstone Family's points. Lexi Culberth was another key contributor, scoring no points along with eight rebounds and seven steals.
Meanwhile, Heritage Christian Academy unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of University Academy Charter by a score of 42-40. Heritage Christian Academy has not had much luck with University Academy Charter recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Heritage Christian Academy got a solid performance out of Caelyn Ferguson, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 16 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Ferguson pulled down eight or more rebounds. Another player making a difference was Carrie Cunningham, who scored five points along with three steals.
Cornerstone Family's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-2. As for Heritage Christian Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 5-2.
Thursday's contest will pit two of the most dominant against one another: Heinen and Ferguson. Heinen has been dynamite this season: she has averaged 17 points, 4.7 steals, and 2.8 rebounds. For her part, Ferguson has averaged 18.1 points, 1.4 blocks, and 2.1 steals.
Everything came up roses for Cornerstone Family against Heritage Christian Academy when the teams last played back in December of 2016 as the squad secured a 50-23 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cornerstone Family since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
