The McClave Cardinals can now show off nine landslide victories after their most recent game on Friday. They blew past Fleming 58-37. Given McClave's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while Fleming is ranked 90th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
McClave was led to victory by Abrielle Gomez and Ashlynn Steinbrunn. Gomez scored 21 points along with five steals and two blocks, while Steinbrunn dropped a double-double on 17 points and 17 rebounds. Steinbrunn has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. McKayla Kiniston was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Fleming's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Madi Serrato, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashley Bornhoft, who scored six points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.
McClave's victory was their 14th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-1. As for Fleming, their loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-5.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. McClave will face off against Swink at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in McClave's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last six games. As for Fleming, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Flatirons Academy at 2:00 p.m. on February 10th. Flatirons Academy will roll in looking for their 14th straight win, something Fleming surely won't give up without a fight.
