Basketball Recap: Melbourne Central Catholic Snaps Five-Game Streak of Wins on the Road

After flying high against Pineapple Cove Classical Academy on Tuesday, Melbourne Central Catholic came back down to earth. The Melbourne Central Catholic Hustlers took a 55-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Edgewood Red Wolves on Wednesday. The Hustlers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Red Wolves apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Despite the defeat, Melbourne Central Catholic had strong showings from Tristan Hamilton, who went 7 for 14 on his way to 19 points along with seven rebounds and three steals, and Dyllan Drygas, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards. Those 11 boards gave Drygas a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Grady Bonenberger, who posted four points.

Even though they lost, Melbourne Central Catholic smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in six consecutive games.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Edgewood to victory, but perhaps none more so than Caleb Trexler, who scored five points in addition to 11 assists and seven rebounds. Trexler has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 11 times he's played. Aidan Gallaher was another key player, putting up eight points and three steals.

Melbourne Central Catholic's loss ended a five-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 12-3. As for Edgewood, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-8.

Melbourne Central Catholic has already played their next match (against Morningside Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Edgewood has also has no score uploaded for their next contest, this one against Calvary Chapel Academy.
